The Process Workshop

Learn about the planning and development process from allocation of sites to delivery, where key decisions get made and different ways people and groups have shaped these. Start to map out the timeline of Circus Street.

What to expect

The workshop will be divided into two sessions.

Session one will focus on the planning process. We will go through a timeline of the planning and development process, identify the points of intervention and explain where relevant information can be accessed and how people can draw out the details that are most important.

Session two will focus on the internal BHCC political decision making process around sites. In this session we will build on the timeline by looking at when key designs are made, who makes them, what influences them, where we as citizens could intervene in that process and how those interventions have been successful or not so successful in the past.

Both sessions will be structured around a presentation by an expert guest speaker followed by questions and an interactive session where we build up the timeline and participants are shown where they can access key pieces of information/documents that relate to the Circus Street processes.

The event will be co hosted by a BHCLT director who is an architect with experience in public and private sector and a local housing activist and academic. Our guest speakers will be a chartered town planner and developer with over 30 years experience and an ex BHCC local councillor and activist who was chair of the housing and policy and resources committee.

Although there will be access to some computers it would be useful for participants to bring laptops/smart phones if they have them.

The session will be relaxed and informal and we will have regular breaks. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

What you will get out of it

We will aim to:

  • increase citizens' skills and knowledge to investigate and understand different aspects of the planning and development process from allocation to delivery
  • Understand where key decisions get made and by who
  • Map out the potential points of democratic and political engagement and intervention.
  • Identify what and where relevant information can be accessed and how people can draw out the details that are most important
  • Support participants to start to explore the planning, development and decision timeline of Circus Street.

What happens after the workshop?

We don't have set expectations about what people will do or commit to coming out of this workshop. The Process side of the project will be developed over time with the working group that emerges from this session and shaped by their interests, time and capacity. We will be learning what happens when research is led by community members and excited to see where those involved take things.

Accessibility and other requirements

The venue is wheelchair accessible. If you have any other access or learning needs that we should know, please drop us an email at the contact details below. Likewise if you have any food requirements (food will be vegetarian and vegan) or anything else you'd like us know or want to ask.
